CTT provided
design phase services to perform a full structural analysis
and final design documents for the reconstruction of the 197-foot high main
steeple, as well as provided repairs to a smaller, 127-foot steeple, which
were both damaged by Hurricane Fran in 1996. Repairs consisted of new multi-wythe
brick masonry walls constructed over original walls, a new steel spire
structure, provisions for attaching new treated plywood sheathing over
structure to allow slate shingle roofing with copper flashing and louvers,
stained glass repair, steeple finial, electrical wiring and lighting,
sidewalk and curbing replacement, and landscaping. CTT also provided full
construction phase services.
In August 1999 the church received the Gertrude S. Carraway
Award of Merit from Preservation North Carolina for its commitment to
promoting historic preservation. The organization sited the church as one of
Wilmington’s most significant historic buildings and holds a key place in
this port city’s history.
