Port City Community Church, Wilmington, NC

Criser Troutman Tanner provided full structural engineering services for the design of a new 90,000 sf Worship Center facility for Port City Community Church located at 200 Cardinal Drive. This building contained classrooms, support areas, office and administration areas, lobbies, restroom facilities, two small auditoriums and one large auditorium with high-bay framing, of which has a mezzanine balcony seating as well. With the exception of second story offices adjacent to the second level balcony seating, the building is primarily a single story building, which was constructed on a radius along its longitudinal length.

The structure consisted of designing a concrete slab-on-grade slab for the ground floor slabs. The second level offices and mezzanine consisted of a composite concrete slab on composite metal decking supported by composite steel beams. The roof consisted of metal roof decking supported by a combination of short and long-span steel roof joists, joist girders and beams.  The stage and balcony risers consisted of cold-formed metal stud-joists with metal decking and a concrete slab. The stage joists were supported by CMU bearing walls while the balcony risers were supported by cold-formed load-bearing metal stud walls. The primary internal structural support system was provided by steel beams and HSS columns with isolated concrete spread footings and continuous wall footings. Exterior walls, as well as walls surrounding the three auditoriums, consisted of load-bearing, tilt-up concrete wall panel construction. The tilt-up walls provided lateral resistance as well and were supported by continuous concrete wall footings. The remainder of the lateral force resisting system consisted of ordinary steel moment frames and concentric steel braced frames. All lateral resisting systems were not specifically designed or detailed for seismic design (R=3.0). Wind/Seismic quality assurance plans as well as a Statement of Special Inspections was provided.

Bid and full Construction Phase services were also provided.
